The London Eye is a huge Ferris wheel located on the
banks of the famous river of London, Thames. The entire
construction is about 135 meters tall, with a wheel having
a diameter of 120 meters. Being the tallest Ferris wheel
in Europe, London Eye becomes the most famed tourist
attraction in the United Kingdom, explored by 3.5 million
tourists, every year. When established in 1999, London
Eye was the biggest Ferris wheel in the world, until
exceeded first by 160 m tall Star of Nanchang in 2006,
and later the 165 m tall Singapore Flyer in the year
2008. However, the wheel is still described as the world's
biggest cantilevered observation wheel by its operators.
Also known as Millennium Wheel, London Eye was officially
named, British Airways London Eye buy later it changed
to the Merlin Entertainments London Eye. However, from
20th January, 2011, it is gifted with a new official
name, EDF Energy London Eye, followed by a three year
sponsorship deal. The actual position of this incredible
structure is at the western end of Jubilee Gardens in
the London Borough of Lambeth, on the South Bank of the
River Thames amidst Westminster Bridge and Hungerford
Bridge. The site falls near former Dome of Discovery
that was constructed for the famous Festival of Britain
in the year 1951.
The beautiful air-conditioned ovoidal passenger capsules
of London Eye are designed and supplied by a North American
aerial lift manufacturer, Leitner-Poma. The structures
nestles 32 capsules, which are strongly attached to the
outer circumference of the wheel and further revolved
by electric motors. Each capsule of London Eye represents
one of the London Boroughs and has a capacity to hold
25 people, who can freely move and enjoy the outer view
of London Eye. Every ride of London Eye comprises one
rotation, which is completed in 30 minutes. The highlight
of London Eye is its astonishing lightening which looks
gorgeous after sundown.
An amazing feature about this wonder is that it generally
doesn’t stop to take any passenger as the speed
of the rotation is sufficiently enough to allow passengers
get on and off from the moving capsules at ground level.
However, it stops, to get older and disabled passengers
safely. London Eye makes you see the whole town, at one
go. Being up in the air, getting to see the whole city
with family and friends is simply incredible and a perfect
outing. The attraction is truly not less than any wonder.
