Next to Sun City, Pilanesberg Game Reserve is situated in the North West province Bojanala. Located in the crater of this city, it is the biggest park in South Africa, occupying in an area of 55,000 hectares. The key beauty of Pilanesberg is the great central lake dam Mankwe. Over time, wind and water has carved fantastic scenery of cliffs, open grasslands, wooded valleys and thickets. Pilanesberg National Park accommodates practically every mammal of South Africa referred as a home to the Big Five.
The park covers in an area of 572 km where one can travel around a standard vehicle. The three main paved roads are named as Kgabo, Kubu and Tswene. There are several camps outside the park namely, Bagatla and Manyane. Several cottages are located in the park itself. For visitors per day, there are several stops on the inside, where there are bars and gift shops. By the middle of the park is an artificial lake and dam Thabayadiotso Mankwe, which means "mountain proud." The area is surrounded by three concentric ridges or rings of hills including the formation rises from the surrounding plain. It is the main feature of the complex geological park named Pilanesberg alkaline ring. This large circular geological feature is ancient even by geological standards, as is the crater of an extinct volcano for a long time, and the result of eruptions some 1200 million years. A number of rare minerals occur in the park which is rather unique and exotic. Pilanesberg Game Reserve rates high among the world's outstanding geological phenomena. Some rare species in southern Africa including lions, elephants, rhinos, black and white, Cape buffalo, leopards, zebras, hyenas, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles. |
