It is believed that the word Tripura is derived from “Tripura Sundari” which is one of the deities of the Hindu mythology.However, the traditional name of the place is "Tuipra" which means "a land adjoining the water" surrounded by Bangladesh on the north, south, and west and the Indian states of Assam and Mizoram to the east.
