The scholars of the world have different opinions regarding the meaning of Nagaland. However, two general meanings of the word Nagaland have been accepted, accordingly, the word Nagaland is derived from the word ‘Nag’ which means “the god of snake”, other perception argued that the word is derived from the Sanskrit word “Nagna” which means “naked”. So, the land of Nagaland is predominantly inhabited by the group of tribes reflecting the aboriginal art and culture of India in the form of customs, traditions, languages, dress, folklore, music, dances etc. that eulogize ancestors, the brave deeds of warriors and traditional heroes. The state of Nagaland is one of the sister states of the North East regions surrounded by the Assam in the West, Myanmar in the East, Arunachal Pradesh in the North and Manipur in the South.

All the tourists whether domestic or foreign are required special permission from the Deputy Resident Commissioner at Nagaland House, Delhi, Kolkata and Assistant Resident Commissioner, Shillong and from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, South Block, NSS Delhi for domestic tourists and foreign tourists respectively. The permits given to the domestic tourists are known as the “Inner Line Permits” and the permits given to the foreigners are known as Restricted Area Permits.
